Avanos (Venessa)
Avanos is a small village of Cappadocia, famous for its pottery and carpets. It is built along the banks of Kizilirmak (Halys River), the longest river in Turkey from origin to end, with approximately 1355 kilometers (842 miles). Halys means “salty river”. Born in northeastern Central Anatolia (in Kizildağ, at 3025 meters (9920 feet) high, and after a curve, flows into the Black Sea by the Cape Bafra area. Their waters get their coloration from the rich clay deposits of Cappadocia, so there is where the name “Kizilirmak” came from, the “Red River”.
